Lincoln County R-III Gifted Flight Program
The Lincoln County R-III School District recognizes the unique needs associated with exceptional academic and/or intellectual giftedness. The Flight Program is based on the philosophy that every child is unique. Our program serves students in grades 2-8.
We believe that early identification and differentiated instruction will ensure that every child reaches his/her potential. Our program is designed to provide opportunities on many levels for students who show strength in academics, leadership, and creativity, as well as to support the unique social and emotional needs of the gifted student.
Vision Statement
Our vision is to be an exemplary gifted program, to advocate for, inspire, and meet the needs of all students in the Lincoln County RIII School District.
Philosophy
The Lincoln County R-III School District recognizes the special needs associated with exceptional talent and/or giftedness. The program’s comprehensive design will provide opportunities for gifted learners to receive special educational services that cannot be met in the regular classroom.
Goals
The Flight program will enable gifted students to grow toward achieving their full potential as learners and as people and to interact with intellectual peers. The Lincoln County R-III gifted program is an educational intervention to support and help challenge student needs and is not provided as an honor or reward.
Flight will provide a qualitatively differentiated curriculum to enable academically and/or intellectually gifted students to reach their potential. To plan such programs, the teachers should incorporate curriculum goals addressing content, process, product, and learning environment.
Gifted at the Elementary Grade level
The Flight curriculum at the elementary level is designed to meet the needs of the gifted learners strictly. Content offered incorporates opportunities to develop creative and critical thinking skills, focused on real world challenges and developing effective problem solving strategies. Students are exposed to systems thinking, diverse resources, and high level technology. Each week, students participate in a STEM based learning activity, a unit of study, and students also explore a topic they have a particular interest in. Matching students to interest areas is a powerful yet practical way of enhancing motivation and increasing the likelihood that students will be willing to express their own unique abilities and talents.
In 2016, the elementary Flight program began implementing Project Lead the Way. PLTW provides a comprehensive approach to STEM education. Students explore modules in Engineering, Biomedical Science, and Computer Science. Through activity-, project-, and problem-based curriculum, PLTW allows Flight students to apply what they know, identify problems, find unique solutions, and lead their own learning.
Gifted at Grades 6th – 8th
The Flight curriculum at the middle school level is designed to meet the needs of gifted learners. Every other week, students participate in STEM-related activities. The objectives of the gifted program at the middle school grades include the following:
